About the Women’s Medical Respite
In March of 2024, the Women’s Medical Respite moved from rental properties with the Kitchen, Inc., into our own home at 1902 E. Page St. That allowed us to accept up to 6 homeless ladies in need of recovery time following hospitalization. During 2024, we were able to serve 54 ladies! Already in 2025, we have seen 14 ladies through our doors.
The WMR has always been blessed with donations and grants in order to keep our doors open. In October, the Musgrave Foundation delighted us with letting us know that they would pay the rest of our mortgage! So, we are mortgage free! But as any homeowner knows, there are always multiple things that a house needs to make it a safe home! So there are lots of things that are constantly going on.
This spring/summer we are building a sustainable garden to help us provide fresh and nutritious vegetables and fruits to our ladies. We have a number of folks providing planters and seeds for the raised beds. If you would like to join us at anytime to tend the gardens, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
Additional needs within the house are for family/friends to bring meals for 7 each day. We are thankful for St. John’s who provides for a Sunday meal once a month! What a special treat for our ladies. THANK YOU. If you would like to adopt another day, feel free to look at Meal Train and sign up for a date that suits you best.
Additionally, we utilize students from 6-10 most evenings to help reduce our staffing costs. These students volunteer to help us, but also to fulfill some of their volunteer hours for their college degrees. When vacation time comes or summer comes, we loose these lovely students and could really use some community helpers to come alongside. This allows our night manager to have a few hours off before night falls when she is busy tending to the safety of the ladies. If you would be interested in spending a few hours each month (or week), please give us a call. We can make all the arrangements to arrange this for you.
Once again, thank you so very much for being a part of the Women’s Medical Respite since our beginning in the Ollis Building in May, 2015! Yes, we will be celebrating our 10th birthday this year! And you have been there since our beginning. We appreciate you!
